FLOURISHING FRIDAY: Bee Pollen

Have you heard of bee pollen!?

The ancient superfood has made an amazing comeback. Did you know it was originally called the 'life-saving dust' by ancient Greeks and Romans? Fancy that. I never thought 'dust' could be life-saving but what do ya know...

"Bee pollen is the food of the young bee and it is approximately 40% protein. It is considered one of nature's most complete nourishing foods. It contains nearly all the nutrients required by humans. About half of its protein is in the form of free amino acids that are ready to be used directly by the body. Such highly assimilable proten can contribute significantly to one's protein needs"

There isn't much 'medical' science* to back up the touted health benefits of bee pollen but real foodies are pretty adamant these little beauties will help with a range of health issues including:

  1. Digestion and circulation: helps regulate the action of the intestines
  2. Detoxification and immunity: helps build the immune system and has the ability to correct body chemistry.
  3. Stress reduction: high content of natural B vitamins help strengthen the nervous endocrine system
Who knows? Science can't seem to make up it's mind. We do know that they do have lots of vitamins and minerals that our bodies need so why not include some in your diet?

You might want to be careful about having bee pollen if you have allergies, particularly hayfever or asthma. And of course, we don't go overboard with 'superfoods' do we? They're just a nice addition to our diet when we need them!

You can get bee pollen from Loving Earth or your local health foods store. They're amazing in smoothies - I love sprinkling them on top of my smoothie bowls!

How do you eat them!?

*You're probably wondering why I would link this article but I think it's important to read both sides of the story and find out if it works for you or not :)
